THOUGHTS ABOUT BOOKS
It’s not that I have nothing to do – there’s always something waiting,  but I enjoyed this book. and thought the readers among you might like it too
THE HUSBAND’S SECRET  by Liane Moriarty
I couldn’t put this one down.  And how good is it that it’s by an Australian author ? I have already taken out another of her books – ” Big Little Lies ” and lost sleep because I just had to keep reading.
The story gets us involved early when we learn that Cecelia – a happily married wife and mother – comes across a letter in the attic from her husband addressed to her, only to be opened in the event of his death …He is away on a business trip.  Now this presents us with a problem.  Naturally we wonder will she open it ?  Would we?  Of course we wouldn’t ….or would we  ?
Then Cecelia realizes her husband has cut his trip short and rushed back when the letter was mentioned, and in the middle of the night  he is up in the attic  searching for it.  In the ATTIC !  He is claustrophobic and won’t even set foot up there.  She gets out f bed and goes straight to where she has put the letter and opens it before he gets back down.  All the guesses about what was in it don’t even come close to the unbelievable words written.  But that is just the beginning of the moral dilemmas which produce ripples that deeply affect others in the community.
The characters are strongly portrayed – Cecelia is a normally very well organized Tupperware lady, happy in her marriage and parenthood and involved in community affairs.
Rachael is the efficient school secretary with a young grandson Jacob ,who she adores.  She is devastated when his parents decide to move to New York, as she has no other family.  She is still mourning her teenage daughter who was killed years ago and although no one has been blamed,  she always feels it was the current school sports teacher, Connor, who was seeing her daughter at the time.
Tess is a young woman who,  with her husband Will and her cousin Felicity have started a successful business.  All  is going well until her cousin  who has been like a sister all her life, reveals that she and Will have fallen in love.
These people all come together in the same district and interact throughout the story.  What a busy brain the author has, to lead us through the intersecting paths of their lives and still bring surprises right up to the end.
But  of course,  don’t forget the epilogue.  She could have written several more books with all the options presented there.
As you will  have realized,  I thoroughly enjoyed the book.  I’m off to the library now to see what other books I can find by Liane Moriarty.
